Credit score for car finance: what lenders actually read, and what they ignore
There is no pass mark. The score you see on a credit app is that agency's own summary, built for you rather than for the lender, and motor finance houses read the underlying data and score it against their own model. Two people with the same number get different answers every day.
- is how long a judgment record is kept unless paid in full within a month
- 6 years
- makes voluntary termination a statutory right, not a default
- s.99
- of the Regulated Activities Order 2001 defines credit broking
- art.36A
Figures on this page are the statutory rights that attach to a regulated motor finance agreement in Great Britain, quoted from the legislation itself and linked in the sources below. Credit score needed for car finance: what the lender actually reads
- The score you see is not the score they use. Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each publish their own scale, and none of them is the model a lender applies. A finance house pulls the raw file, adds what you declared about income and outgoings, and runs its own scorecard tuned to the loss experience of its own book. That is why a subprime lender can accept a file a prime lender declined on the same day, and why a published minimum score would be meaningless even if one existed.
- Recent conduct outweighs an old default. What moves a motor finance decision most is the last twelve to twenty four months: missed payments, arrangements to pay, payday borrowing, a rising balance on revolving credit, and how close you run to your limits. A default from four years ago that has been quiet since is much less damaging than two late payments last quarter. Adverse entries drop off the file after six years, and a satisfied county court judgment is removed sooner only if it was paid in full within a month of the judgment.
- Affordability is a separate test that fails separately. The FCA requires a creditworthiness assessment that covers both the risk of non payment and whether the payments are sustainable for you. A clean file with thin income evidence or heavy committed outgoings can be declined on affordability while scoring well on risk. This is the reason an applicant with an excellent score is sometimes refused, and it is why the answer to that refusal is usually documentation rather than repair.
- A paid agreement builds the file, a mishandled one damages it. Motor finance reports monthly like any other credit account. Paid on time for three or four years it is a substantial positive entry, which is a real reason people use it to rebuild. Arrears report the same way in the other direction, and a voluntary surrender or a repossession is a serious marker. Voluntary termination under s.99 is a statutory right rather than a default, so it is not in itself an adverse entry, though the account closing early is visible and some lenders read it.
Common questions
- What credit score is needed to finance a car in the UK?
- There is no published minimum, because lenders score the underlying file with their own models rather than the number an agency shows you. The same applicant is priced differently by different lenders.
- Does car finance affect credit score, and can it improve it?
- An agreement paid on time reports monthly and builds a positive record over the term. The same account reports arrears just as faithfully if payments are missed.
- Do you need good credit for PCP? Why an excellent score can still be refused
- Most often on affordability rather than risk. The FCA requires lenders to assess whether payments are sustainable, and thin income evidence or heavy commitments fail that test independently of your score.
- Does voluntary termination hurt your credit file?
- It is a statutory right under s.99 and is not a default. The account closing early is visible on the file, and individual lenders form their own view of it.
- How long do defaults stay on my file?
- Six years from the date recorded. A judgment is kept for 6 years unless it is paid in full within a month, in which case it is removed.
- Car finance for low income: does the amount decide it?
- Not on its own. The FCA requires a creditworthiness assessment covering both the risk of non payment and whether the payments are sustainable for you, so what matters is the headroom left after committed outgoings rather than the gross figure. A modest income with little else to service can clear an affordability test that a larger income carrying heavy commitments fails.
