0 deposit car finance: what it really costs over the term

A no-deposit agreement does not reduce what the car costs. It moves the whole price into the financed balance, so every pound of the deposit you did not pay attracts interest for the length of the term.

What zero deposit car finance changes

  1. The total amount payable goes up, always. Deposit reduces the amount financed pound for pound, and interest is charged on what is financed. Putting nothing down therefore raises both the monthly payment and the total repaid, and the gap widens with the term. That is arithmetic, not a lender's choice.
  2. You start the agreement in negative equity. A car loses value fastest in its first year. With no deposit, the balance outstanding exceeds what the car is worth almost immediately and stays that way for longer, which matters if you want to change cars early or if the car is written off and the insurer pays market value.
  3. Acceptance is harder, not easier. Deposit is the lender's protection against exactly the negative equity above, so a zero-deposit application is assessed more strictly than the same application with money down. On a marginal file, finding a deposit is often the difference between a decline and an approval.
  4. When it is still the right decision. If the cash is genuinely needed elsewhere, or if a manufacturer deposit contribution is doing the work instead of your own money, no deposit can be rational. The test is whether you are choosing it or being sold it, and the total amount payable is where the answer shows.

Common questions

Is no deposit car finance more expensive?
Over the term, yes. The monthly payment and the total amount payable are both higher than the same agreement with a deposit, because interest is charged on a larger financed balance for the whole period.
Can I get no deposit finance with bad credit?
It is the hardest combination, because both factors point the same way for the lender. Where it is declined, the same application with a deposit against an older car is often approved.
No deposit cars: what is a deposit contribution?
Money the manufacturer or dealer puts towards the deposit, usually tied to taking their own finance product. It genuinely reduces the amount financed, but it is conditional, so check what you give up in rate or in discount to receive it.
Buy car no deposit: does a part exchange count as a deposit?
Yes. Equity in the car you are trading in is applied as deposit and reduces the financed balance in the same way cash does. Negative equity works the other way and is added to it.
Is low deposit car finance easier to get accepted for than cheap car finance no deposit?
Usually, yes. A deposit is the lender's protection against the car being worth less than the balance, so a zero-deposit application is assessed more strictly than the same application with money down. On a marginal file, finding some deposit is often the difference between a decline and an approval.
