Car finance with no credit check: why a regulated lender cannot skip the check
A lender writing regulated consumer credit has to assess creditworthiness before it lends. That is a rule, not a preference, so an advertisement offering regulated motor finance with no credit check is describing something the firm is not permitted to do. What the phrase usually points at is a different product entirely.
- gives voluntary termination on regulated credit, never on consumer hire
- s.99
- of the Regulated Activities Order 2001 defines credit broking
- art.36A
- to withdraw from a regulated credit agreement, Consumer Credit Act 1974 s.66A
- 14 days
Figures on this page are the statutory rights that attach to a regulated motor finance agreement in Great Britain, quoted from the legislation itself and linked in the sources below. KnownVehicle is not authorised for credit broking and introduces no lender: nothing here is a quote, an application or a recommendation.

Credit checks for car finance: what the phrase actually attaches to
- The check is required, not optional. The FCA's consumer credit rules require a creditworthiness assessment covering the risk of non payment and whether the credit is affordable for the borrower, and that assessment has to be based on sufficient information, which in practice means the credit file. A firm advertising regulated car finance without one is either not doing what it says, or is not carrying on regulated credit business at all. Check the firm's permissions on the Financial Services Register before you go further.
- A soft search is a real thing and is not the same as no check. A quotation search, often called a soft search, is a credit file enquiry that does not leave a footprint other lenders can see. It lets a firm tell you what it would likely offer before you commit to a full application. That is genuinely useful and worth using, but it is still a credit check: the lender reads your file, it just does not mark it. Nothing about it removes the assessment, and a full search follows before any agreement is made.
- Pay weekly and buy here pay here is a dealer selling on credit. Many pay weekly operators are dealers financing their own stock rather than brokers introducing a lender. Some hold consumer credit permissions and do assess you; some structure the deal as hire so that different rules apply. The common features are a high total cost, a car chosen from a small lot rather than the market, and a tracker or immobiliser fitted so the vehicle can be disabled. Read the agreement to see which regime it is under before you sign.
- Leasing and hire are assessed too. A no credit check leasing company faces the same commercial problem as a lender: it is handing over an expensive asset for a small first payment. Consumer hire agreements are regulated differently from credit, and the Consumer Credit Act rights described elsewhere on this site, including voluntary termination under s.99, attach to credit rather than to hire. A lease advertised as needing no check is usually asking instead for a much larger initial payment, a guarantor, or both.
Common questions
- Is no credit check car finance real?
- Not as regulated credit. FCA rules require a creditworthiness assessment before lending, so a regulated lender cannot skip it. The phrase generally points at dealer credit, hire, or a soft search.
- Soft credit check car finance: what is a soft search, and are there cars with no credit check?
- A quotation enquiry that reads your credit file without leaving a footprint other lenders can see. It is still a credit check, and a full search follows before an agreement is made.
- Pay as you go car finance no credit check: are pay weekly car dealers regulated?
- Some are and some structure the deal as hire. Check the firm on the FCA's Financial Services Register and read which regime the agreement says it is under.
- Buying a car with no credit check: do I get voluntary termination on a pay weekly deal?
- Only if it is a regulated hire purchase or conditional sale agreement. Section 99 attaches to credit, not to consumer hire, so the agreement type decides it.
- Do no credit check car leasing companies exist?
- A hire company still assesses the risk of handing over the asset. In practice the alternative offered is a larger initial payment or a guarantor rather than no assessment.
