Car finance check: how an outstanding finance marker is read, and what it cannot say

An outstanding finance marker is not a public record. It is an entry a lender places on an industry asset register when it writes an agreement against a vehicle, and it stays there until the lender clears it. That is why the free GOV.UK services show tax, MOT and SORN but never finance, and why the answer has to come from the register rather than from the seller.

Figures on this page are the statutory rights that attach to a regulated motor finance agreement in Great Britain, quoted from the legislation itself and linked in the sources below. KnownVehicle is not authorised for credit broking and introduces no lender: nothing here is a quote, an application or a recommendation.

How to check if a car is on finance, and how the answer is produced

  1. The lender registers the agreement, not the DVLA. When a lender writes hire purchase, PCP or a conditional sale agreement it records its interest against the vehicle identification number and the registration on an asset finance register. The DVLA holds no field for it at all, so checking tax or MOT history tells you nothing about whether money is owed. A check reads the register the lenders themselves write to, which is the only place the marker exists.
  2. A marker names the lender and the date, not the balance. What a register entry carries is the finance house, the agreement type and the date it was recorded. It does not carry the settlement figure, because that changes every day as payments are made and interest accrues. Anyone quoting you an exact outstanding balance from a plate alone is quoting something the register does not hold, and the only authoritative number is the settlement figure the lender issues on request.
  3. How much is left on your own car comes from your lender. If the agreement is yours, you do not need a register check to find the balance. Your lender must give you a settlement figure, and the Consumer Credit Act 1974 s.94 gives you the right to complete payments ahead of time and to be told what that costs. Ask for a settlement figure in writing; it is valid for a stated number of days and is the only figure that will actually clear the agreement.
  4. A stale marker is common and is not proof of debt. Lenders are not always prompt at clearing entries once an agreement ends, so a marker against a car that was settled months ago is an ordinary result rather than a red flag on its own. The way to resolve it is to ask the seller for the lender's settlement letter and to contact the finance house named on the entry. A marker that nobody can explain is the one worth walking away from.

Common questions

Does a free GOV.UK check show outstanding finance?
No. The free services cover vehicle tax, MOT history and SORN status. Finance is recorded on private asset registers written to by lenders, and no DVLA service exposes it.
Can I find out how much finance is left on someone else's car?
No. The settlement figure belongs to the agreement holder and their lender. A register check can tell you that an agreement exists and who holds it; only the borrower can obtain the balance.
How do I check finance on a car I am about to buy?
Read the register entry, then ask the seller for the finance house's settlement letter dated within the last few days. The two together are what a careful buyer relies on, not the seller's word.
Does an outstanding marker mean I cannot buy the car?
It means the lender still has an interest in it. Buying without that interest being cleared is what creates the risk covered by the Hire Purchase Act 1964 Part III, and the safer route is for the seller to settle first.
How much finance is left on my car, and who tells me?
Your lender, not a register. A register entry names the finance house, the agreement type and the date, never the balance. If the agreement is yours, ask the lender for a settlement figure in writing: section 94 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives you the right to settle early and to be told what that costs.
