Car finance Birmingham: why the lender scores you, not your postcode
Motor finance in Great Britain is written by national lenders against a national credit file. Searching for your city rarely surfaces a different product; it surfaces dealers near you who all introduce to the same finance houses. Two things about your address do count, and neither is the city itself.
- of the Regulated Activities Order 2001 defines credit broking
- art.36A
- of address history is what most motor finance lenders ask for
- 3 years
- gives 14 days to withdraw wherever in Great Britain you signed

Car finance Manchester or car finance Leeds: what your address does and does not affect
- The lender scores the person, not the postcode. A motor finance decision is built from your credit file, your declared income and your existing commitments. Lenders authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority are required to assess affordability and creditworthiness for the individual, and none of the major UK motor finance houses publishes a rate card that varies by city. A Birmingham and a Bristol application with the same file are the same application.
- Address history is the part that genuinely matters. What does move a decision is the stability and verifiability of your address history. Lenders check the electoral roll and usually want three years of addresses, so a recent move, a gap, or an address that does not match your licence and bank statements causes referrals and declines. That is an address problem rather than a location problem, and it looks identical in every city.
- Local means the dealer, and the dealer is the introducer. What is actually local is the forecourt. A dealership is usually a credit broker introducing you to a panel of lenders, and it must be authorised by the FCA to do that. You can read any firm's permissions on the Financial Services Register before you sit down with it, and a dealer whose entry does not carry credit broking permission should not be arranging finance for you at all.
- Northern Ireland is the one real jurisdictional difference. Within Great Britain the consumer credit rules are uniform, so England, Scotland and Wales differ only in the court that would hear a dispute. Northern Ireland has its own courts and its own enforcement procedure, which is why it is treated separately here rather than listed as another city.
Common questions
- Are there car finance deals specific to my city, say car finance Sheffield or car finance Nottingham?
- Rarely. Dealer offers vary by stock and by manufacturer campaign, not by city, and the underwriting behind them is national.
- Car finance Leicester, car finance Bristol: why do lenders ask for three years of address history?
- To verify identity and to read your credit file consistently. Gaps and mismatches against the electoral roll and your driving licence are a common cause of referral.
- Car finance west midlands, car finance deals Birmingham: does a bad credit file matter more in some places?
- No. The file is national and so is the assessment. What varies locally is which dealers hold stock in your price range.
- How do I check a local dealer is allowed to arrange finance?
- Search the firm on the FCA's Financial Services Register and look for credit broking permission. Arranging regulated credit without it is a regulated activity carried on unlawfully.
