Car finance for private sale: the three routes lenders allow, and the check first
Most hire purchase and PCP lenders will only fund a car bought from a trader, because they are buying the car themselves and need a seller they can hold to account. That leaves three routes for a private purchase.
- agreements cover almost every financed car in the UK
- 3
- to withdraw from a regulated credit agreement, Consumer Credit Act 1974 s.66A
- 14 days
- of the total price is the voluntary termination ceiling, Consumer Credit Act 1974 s.100
- 50%

The three routes, and the check that comes first
- An unsecured personal loan, which does not care who sells. A loan is paid to you and you buy the car outright, so the seller's status is irrelevant to the lender. It is the standard answer for a private purchase, and it means the car is yours from the moment you pay, with no lender interest in it at all.
- A specialist lender that funds private sales. A small number of motor lenders will write hire purchase on a private sale, usually with an inspection, an age and mileage limit, and payment made directly to the seller's account rather than to you. Expect a higher rate than the same agreement bought from a dealer.
- A dealer sale, which is what most finance assumes. Buying from a trader brings consumer rights the private market does not have: the car has to be of satisfactory quality and as described, and where finance is involved the lender shares liability for misdescription under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. That protection is part of what the higher price buys.
- Check the car for outstanding finance before anything moves. A privately sold car can still be subject to somebody else's agreement, and the lender's interest follows the car. Run a provenance check that returns finance, write off and stolen markers before you pay, which is what the rest of this site exists to compare.
Common questions
- Why is financing a car from a private seller harder?
- Under hire purchase the lender buys the car, so it wants a seller with obligations it can enforce and a business it can trace. A private seller offers neither, which is why the loan route is the common answer.
- Is a dealer sale safer?
- Legally yes. A trader owes statutory obligations about quality and description that a private seller does not, and where finance is involved the lender shares responsibility for what you were told.
- What if a privately bought car turns out to be on finance?
- Part III of the Hire Purchase Act 1964 can protect a private buyer who bought in good faith and without notice of the agreement, passing good title to them. Relying on it is far worse than checking first.
- Can a car loan for private sale buy any car?
- Yes. The lender is lending against you rather than against the vehicle, so age, mileage and seller are your decision. The trade off is that the rate is priced on your file with no asset behind it.
- Can you finance a car from a private seller with hire purchase?
- Sometimes. A small number of motor lenders will write hire purchase on a private sale, usually with an inspection, an age and mileage limit, and payment made straight to the seller's account rather than to you. Expect a higher rate than the same agreement bought from a dealer, and check the car for outstanding finance before anything moves.
