Car finance eligibility checker: why you check car finance eligibility before applying

An eligibility check and an application are different events on your credit file, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in this part of the market. One is invisible to other lenders; the other is not.

Figures in this panel are the statutory rights that attach to a regulated motor finance agreement, quoted from the Consumer Credit Act 1974 itself and linked in the sources below. Am I eligible for car finance? What an eligibility check can tell you

  1. A soft search leaves no footprint other lenders can see. A soft search is recorded on your file but is visible only to you. Firms use it to return an indicative decision and rate without marking you as having applied for credit, which is why an eligibility checker can be run repeatedly and an application cannot.
  2. An indicative decision is not an offer. The decision a checker returns is based on a partial view and on what you typed. It can be withdrawn when the full application runs the hard search, verifies income and prices the actual car. Treat a high match score as a shortlist, not as an approval.
  3. Affordability is assessed separately from your credit history. A clean file with no headroom is declined as readily as a damaged one. Lenders test whether the payment is sustainable against income and committed expenditure, so the figures you enter about outgoings matter as much as the score behind them.
  4. Apply once, to the firm the checks agree on. Several hard searches in a short period is itself a negative signal. Run the soft checks first, discard the lenders that return a poor indication, and make one full application to the one that returns the best total amount payable rather than the best headline rate.

Is there a maximum age limit for car finance at the other end?

There is no statutory upper age for a credit agreement, and refusing one on age alone would be an act a lender has to justify. What lenders do apply is an affordability test that runs to the end of the term, so the question they ask an older applicant is what the income will be in the final year rather than what it is today.

In practice that shows up as a limit on the applicant's age at the END of the agreement rather than at the start, and it varies by lender. A pension in payment, or other income that continues through the term, is what the test is looking for, and a shorter term is the lever that most often turns a refusal into an offer.

Common questions

How long does a car finance decision take?
An indicative soft-search decision is usually immediate. A full decision waits on proof of income, address history and the car itself, so a same-day approval is common and a delayed one usually means a document is outstanding rather than a problem.
Why was I accepted by the checker and declined on application?
The checker priced an estimate; the application priced you. Income that cannot be evidenced, an address history gap, or a car the lender will not lend against are the three usual causes, and only the last is fixed by changing the car.
Does a car finance soft check lower my credit score?
No. Checking your own file, and soft searches run to give you an indicative decision, do not affect how other lenders see you. Only the hard search that accompanies a full application does.
What do lenders ask for?
Typically three years of address history, employment and income, and bank details for the direct debit. Self-employed applicants are usually asked for accounts or tax calculations covering a similar period.
Will I get accepted for car finance if the checker says yes?
Not necessarily. The decision a checker returns is indicative, based on a partial view and on what you typed, and it can be withdrawn when the full application runs the hard search, verifies your income and prices the actual car. Treat a high match as a shortlist, not an approval.
Is soft search car finance really invisible to other lenders?
Yes. A soft search is recorded on your file but visible only to you, which is why an eligibility checker can be run repeatedly and an application cannot. Only the hard search that comes with a full application is seen by other lenders.
