Car finance pre approval: three stages, and only the last one binds

A pre approval is an indication, not an agreement. It tells you what a lender expects to offer on the information it has so far, which is usually a soft search and what you typed in. It becomes binding only when a full application is underwritten and the agreement is executed.

Figures on this page are the statutory rights that attach to a regulated motor finance agreement in Great Britain, quoted from the legislation itself and linked in the sources below. KnownVehicle is not authorised for credit broking and introduces no lender: nothing here is a quote, an application or a recommendation.

How long does finance approval take for a car? The three stages, and what each is worth

  1. Stage one is a quotation search with no footprint. An eligibility checker runs a quotation search against your credit file. Other lenders cannot see it, so running several does not damage your file, and this is the stage where comparing widely costs you nothing. What comes back is a likelihood and an indicative rate, calculated from your file and the figures you entered. Nothing here is checked against a payslip or a bank statement, which is why the indication can move later.
  2. Stage two is underwriting, and it verifies what you claimed. A full application triggers a hard search, which is visible to other lenders, and the lender now verifies identity, address history, income and outgoings. Most decisions are returned within minutes because the process is automated. What pushes an application into a manual referral is a mismatch: a name or address that does not agree across documents, income that does not match the bank statements, or a recent change of employment.
  3. Stage three is the agreement, and only that binds. Until the agreement is executed nothing is committed. Once it is, the Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives you 14 days to withdraw under s.66A, and the lender must have given you the pre contract information and the total amount payable before you signed. Read the total amount payable rather than the monthly figure, because the monthly figure alone tells you nothing about the term or the deferred payment.
  4. What actually causes delay. An automated accept or decline usually returns the same day. The cases that run to several days are manual referrals, and the common causes are thin or unverifiable address history, self employed income needing accounts or several months of statements, an unusual vehicle the lender wants to value, or a private sale where the lender has to satisfy itself about the car and the seller before releasing funds.

How long does car finance approval take uk lenders, stage by stage

The three stages take very different amounts of time and only the last one binds. An eligibility or soft-search indication is returned in seconds and commits nobody. A full application decision is usually the same working day, often within the hour, because it is an automated underwrite against the credit file and the affordability figures you supplied.

What takes the time after that is the paperwork and the car: proof of income or address where the automated checks did not settle it, the dealer's invoice, and the payout itself, which is where a same-day approval becomes a two or three day collection. A decision held longer than that is almost always a document nobody has chased.

Common questions

What does pre approved car finance mean?
That a lender expects to offer you finance on the information it holds so far, usually from a soft search. It is an indication and is not binding until a full application is underwritten and the agreement executed.
Does a car finance soft search affect my credit score?
No. A quotation search is not visible to other lenders and does not affect your file. The hard search at full application is visible.
How long does car finance approval take?
Most automated decisions return within minutes. Manual referrals for income verification, thin address history or an unusual vehicle can take several working days.
What are the usual criteria for car finance?
UK residency and address history, typically three years, an age minimum of 18, verifiable income sufficient for the payments, and a credit file the lender's model accepts.
Can I change my mind after approval?
Yes. Section 66A gives 14 days to withdraw from a regulated credit agreement once it is made, and before that you are not committed at all.
Does a PCP eligibility checker leave a footprint?
No. An eligibility checker runs a quotation search that other lenders cannot see, so running several does not damage your file, and this is the stage where comparing widely costs you nothing. What comes back is a likelihood and an indicative rate, not a decision.
