Car finance credit check: what a soft search shows and a hard search leaves behind

There are two different searches in motor finance and they do different things to your file. One is run to give you an indication and is recorded so that only you can see it. The other is run because you are applying, and every lender that looks at your file afterwards can see it. Knowing which one a form is about to run is the single most useful thing before you start filling in applications, because the order you do this in changes what the next lender sees.

Soft check car finance: what a quotation search really is

A quotation or eligibility search asks the credit reference agency for enough data to score you without recording a search that other lenders can see. It appears on your own copy of the file, marked as a quotation, and it does not tell the next lender that you were shopping. That is what makes it the right first step: you can compare several lenders' indications without any of them knowing about the others.

What a hard search leaves behind, and for how long

A full application records a credit application search that stays visible to other lenders for a period set by the credit reference agency. One is unremarkable. Several within a few weeks is the pattern that reads as somebody being declined and trying again, and it can move a borderline decision the wrong way. Do the comparing with quotation searches and keep the application for the lender you intend to proceed with.

Read your own file before anybody else does

You have a right of access to the data an organisation holds about you, and the credit reference agencies all offer a statutory copy. Reading it first means a defaulted account you had forgotten, an address that never got updated or a judgment you thought had gone is something you already know about rather than something a lender tells you about. Correcting an error takes time, so it is work to do before the application, not after a decline.

Questions people ask about car finance credit check

Will I be accepted for car finance if the soft search says yes?

An eligibility indication is a score against the data available at that moment, not an offer. It is a good guide to whether to apply, and it is still conditional on identity, address history, income and, on a private sale, the vehicle itself. Read what the indication says it is before treating it as a decision.

Does checking my own credit file hurt my score?

No. A search you run on yourself is recorded as such and is not visible to lenders as an application. It is the full application search, not your own read of the file, that other lenders see.

How many applications is too many?

There is no published number, because lenders set their own tolerance. The safe approach is one full application, for the lender whose quotation you intend to accept, and quotation searches for everything you are only comparing.

Is there any such thing as motor finance with no credit check at all?

Not as regulated credit. A lender has to assess whether the borrowing is affordable before it lends, so an advert promising no check is describing a soft search, a different product, or something you should read the Financial Services Register about before going further.
