The answer is no, and it is not a lending policy a better applicant could argue around. A contractual obligation is unenforceable against somebody who was a minor when the contract was made, so an agreement signed at 17 gives a lender nothing it could enforce, and none of them write one. That leaves two real questions for the year before eighteen: what a parent can lawfully do with a car you will drive, and what you can put on a credit file that is still empty.
Can you finance a car at 17 UK-wide, or does somewhere say yes?
Nowhere says yes, and the reason is statutory rather than commercial. The Minors' Contracts Act 1987 legislates around the position that an obligation is unenforceable against a party who was a minor when the contract was made, and a regulated motor agreement is a contract for money rather than for necessaries. A lender writing one would hold a car it had paid for and a debtor it could not sue. Deposit size, income and a willing dealer change none of that.
Car finance for 17 year olds usually means a parent's agreement, and that has rules
A parent can take finance in their own name, and then it is theirs: their liability, their credit file, their name on the agreement. The car is normally registered and insured to them, and the finance company's terms say who may keep and drive it. Putting a parent's name on an agreement for a car that is really the 17-year-old's is a misstatement to the lender and a breach of the terms it is written under. That is a different thing from a parent buying a car their child is insured to drive.
Can you get car finance at 17 for a motorbike instead?
Not in your own name, for exactly the same reason: the agreement, not the vehicle, is what the law refuses to enforce. A 17-year-old can ride a moped or a 125 on a CBT and a provisional licence, so the licence is not the obstacle here, and a cheaper bike does not make the contract enforceable. Where a bike is the plan, the year is better spent on the CBT and on a credit file than on applications that cannot be accepted.
What the year is actually for, and what a lender will read at eighteen
Two things can be built before the birthday and neither needs credit. The first is a licence: GOV.UK says a provisional can be applied for at 15 years and 9 months and that you can usually start driving a car at 17, so the test can already be passed by the time finance is possible. The second is a file with something in it, because a lender with no payment history to read prices the uncertainty rather than the applicant. A small, visibly well conducted account in your own name is what turns an empty file into a readable one.
Can you get a car on finance at 17 by waiting for a birthday mid-application?
An agreement is signed on the day it is signed, so one dated before the eighteenth birthday is the unenforceable one however close the date is. Lenders do accept applications that complete on or after the birthday, and a dealer holding a car for a few weeks is ordinary. What is not ordinary, and what a lender will unwind, is backdating or fronting: the agreement has to be signed by the person it names, on a date they were already eighteen.
Questions people ask about can i finance a car at 17
Why will no lender make an exception at 17?
Because the refusal is not really theirs to make. An obligation is unenforceable against a party who was a minor when the contract was made, so the lender would have no way to recover the balance through the courts. A guarantee of that obligation is not unenforceable against the guarantor merely for that reason, which is why a parent's own agreement is the route that exists.
Can a parent be a guarantor for a 17-year-old instead of taking the agreement?
A guarantor guarantees somebody else's agreement, and at 17 there is no enforceable agreement to guarantee. The parent can take the finance in their own name, which makes them the borrower rather than the guarantor. Guarantor finance becomes the useful option at eighteen, when there is a borrower the lender can contract with.
Does an application at 17 leave anything on my credit file?
An application that is submitted and declined can leave a search, and a run of searches in a short period is visible to the next lender. Since the outcome is known in advance, the cheapest thing to do in the months before eighteen is not to apply at all, and to arrive with a clean file and a few months of conduct on it instead.
Can I buy a car outright at 17 and insure it myself?
Yes. The bar is on the credit agreement, not on owning or insuring a vehicle, so a car bought with cash can be registered and insured to a 17-year-old who holds the right licence. Price the insurance before the car: at this age the annual premium frequently exceeds what the finance on the same car would have cost.
If I sign at 18, do I still get time to change my mind?
Yes. Under a regulated agreement the borrower may withdraw without giving any reason by giving notice before the end of the period of 14 days beginning with the day after the relevant day. It is a statutory right, so it applies to a first agreement at eighteen exactly as it does to any other.
